Mediating Learning Experiences: Video Documentation
The BScE.TV online video channel is THE place to get first-hand information about the Initial Teacher Training Programm of the University of Luxembourg since it is produced by Bachelor in Educational Sciences students under the direction of Robert A.P. REUTER.
Background
Inspired by a documentary movie on “successful” schools in Germany called Treibhäuser der Zukunft, convinced by the creative powers of our students, and driven by a general need for better PR work in favour of the Bachelor en Sciences de l’Éducation (bachelor professionnel) study programme, I finally decided to ask Charles Max (study director of this bachelor programme) if I could organise an optional seminar for students in educational sciences, which would aim at the production of a video documentation on learning and teaching in our study programme. He very promptly agreed to include this seminar in the Transdisciplinary Curriculum Line of Developing Interests, under the designation Mediating Learning Experiences: Video Documentation.
In the beginning, I thought it would be possible and sensible to produce a full-length documentary movie, but soon, while working with students, I was forced to comprehend that such an enterprise would be very difficult. Indeed students could take the optional seminar for only one semester while the whole process of conceiving, planning, producing, post-producing and publishing a genuine documentary movie would inevitably take more than a few months.
So we decided, together, that it would be much better to switch towards another concept, namely that of an online video channel with short clips under 10 minutes, each one illustrating a specific question about learning and teaching in the bachelor in educational sciences.
We rapidly discovered that an ideal platform for our endeavour would be www.youtube.com, since it is a very well established online service with a lot of daily users and visitors. Moreover, we would be able to use this platform to get feedback, comments and questions from anybody interested in the educational sciences bachelor programme. People could suggest questions they want to be addressed in future episodes, either by posting a text comment or by posting a video-response.
So far the channel includes various interviews on a wide range of topics, featuring Charles Max (programme director), Lucien Kerger (vice-rector), students from the bachelor programme and prospective students visiting the University of Luxembourg on the Open Day 2008.
